  24.     Although I don't (yet) receive Lightspeed, I have no  
  25. difficulty in awarding Adam the daily texturing prize.  I can easily  
  26. imagine how a dog's nose served as inspiration for the appearance,  
  27. but in taking a close look at the ships' surfaces, it seems clear  
  28. that the veins effect is the predominant influence.
  29.     Last night I was able to approximate the shadow surface by  
  30. using a surface color of 180, 180, 180; no luminosity or diffuse  
  31. (memory work here--LW is at my home studio); 100% specular; 400%  
  32. reflection, with a veins effect in the texture panel.  I have the  
  33. camera facing in the +z direction, so I gave the veins a velocity in  
  34. the z direction.  This causes the same sort of change as seen on  
  35. the ships.  I have a reflection image loaded in reflection options.   
  36. The effect seems to be quite sensitive upon the color highlights  
  37. button being turned on, but not terribly sensitive upon the color of  
  38. the lights, until one gets to more brilliant shades of any  
  39. particular color.
  40.     The problem I'm still having is to get the surface to have  
  41. a "hot black plastic" appearance.  I switched my reflection map to a  
  42. small brush of the inside of a smooth, black salad bowl, with a few  
  43. specular hot spots.  This helped quite a bit, but I still haven't  
  44. achieved that liquid plastic look.
  45.     Maybe I'll figure that out tonight.  On the other hand, if  
  46. the tutorial in Lightspeed has a much simpler way of accomplishing  
  47. the same thing, I wouldn't mind knowing that, either.  (Manny--This  
  48. isn't a weasel option of trying to get the benefits of your  
  49. publication without purchase.  I just haven't had the time to  
  50. subscribe!)
